Dandruff is a common problem which can often lead to frustration and deterioration in quality of life. It presents as small white to yellow flakes or scales at the hair roots, which can sometimes come out of the scalp during combing or touching. It may be associated with itching and pimples on scalp and face. While mild dandruff can be treated with home remedies like tea tree oil or over-the-counter anti dandruff shampoos, moderate to severe dandruff can need medicines from your dermatologist. Antifungal capsules, lotions and shampoos (like ketoconazole) can be prescribed as Malassezia furfur, a fungus has been found responsible for exacerbation of dandruff. Severe cases may need prolonged topical or oral medicines with lifestyle modifications. If treated, dandruff can be brought under control and you can lead a normal life.
